ABSTRACT

This chapter considers one of the important ways in which the play and learning of babies can be encouraged as soon as they can sit up comfortably and before they begin to crawl. By now the baby will be awake for much longer periods of the day. Of course, much of the time will still be taken up with feeding, washing and changing, and we would emphasize the importance of building in time for the interplay that goes on during these activities and which is such a vital element in the baby’s waking life.
