ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. Today’s social mobilities transpire within reticulations of legibility. They occur in contexts of unremitting signal emission and mass sensing. A sensor society is thereby defined by mass motion, mass motion sensing and mass motion computation. Focusing on CCTV’s abrupt rise to prominence principally involves excavating the neoliberal ethos and design diagrams underlying the structural restoration of municipal spaces and civic conduct. The author wish to focus here on what he regards as the pivotal factors and appetites responsible for CCTV’s initial inauguration, and subsequent explosion, as a teleoptic overture in circulations of spatial supervision. However, before explicitly attending to such matters, by way of supplementary introduction, touch on CCTV’s implicit symbolic and technical specificities, as these further explicate its prevalent cultural appeal and salient embeddedness in social life.
