ABSTRACT

The rapid economic growth since the 1980s has provided more financial and ‘cultural’ capital for the development of museums and other ‘culture’ facilities in mainland China. During the eighteenth national congress of the CCP in 2012, Hu Jintao, the then General Secretary, announced the Party's long-term strategy to ‘push for great development and prosperity of socialist culture’ in order to build a ‘great nation of culture’, to enhance the ‘soft power of culture’ of China and to cultivate social morals and customs, to maintain social harmony, and to encourage cultural creativeness and cultural industry (Hu J.T. 2012).
