ABSTRACT

The genetic test I got with 23andMe was worth every penny of the $299 I spent on it. Since receiving my report, I've appropriated my ‘entextua-lized genome’ to perform a whole host of useful actions. As I mentioned in chapter 7, I used it to consult with my doctor about my risk of developing colon cancer and to schedule a colonoscopy. I also used it to get a referral to see an ophthalmologist since I carry a variant of the CHF gene which is associated with age-related macular degeneration, a condition my mother suffers from. I altered my running regimen to include more sprints after finding out that I carry the R allele of the ACTN3 gene associated with rapid muscle contractions. I even used the test to comfort myself after failing my driving test, noting that I carry a variant of rs6265 associated with impaired motor-skills learning. At least I have the A allele of that gene, which has also been found to be protective against depression when carriers are subjected to repeated defeat.
