ABSTRACT
In September 1991, I sat observing a group of primary school-aged children and their teacher during Sunday School at an Mrican American Baptist church. Tanisha (all participants' names are pseudonyms) stood and recited all 27 books of the New Testament from memory. Other children discussed with their teacher, Sister Justine, the meaning of the metaphor, 'fisher of men' and whether they too, like Jesus' disciples, could become fishers of men. Jared refused to complete the accompanying written worksheet. Sister Justine pointed out that his grandmother would not approve andJared continued to misbehave. Then, Sister Justine told a funny story of a time when she andJ ared had been rebuked by his formidable grandmother and the class all laughed together.Jared, still laughing, completed his worksheet. Later, Jeff debated with Sister Justine how God's love for all his children was relevant to his own situation at school.
