ABSTRACT

The concluding chapter draws together the various theoretical ideas and concepts presented throughout the book, using them to critically discuss a number of core social work aims and values in the present day. We then turn to discuss the importance of reflexivity and thinking reflexively both for social work and social theory. Rejoining with the work of Pierre Bourdieu, the concepts of habitus and field are used to reflect critically on why the theoretical legacy of such an influential social theorist has been largely overlooked by social work, and the implications of this more broadly. The chapter concludes by reviewing the relationship between social work and social theory, emphasising the important insights and ways of thinking social theory can open up for social work in the context of a rapidly globalizing world.
