ABSTRACT

In Chapter 1, the state of the art with regard to our understanding of the twin phenomena of company strategy and organizational design was briefly reviewed. Certain shortcomings and weaknesses were identified, and the consideration in Chapter 2 of the issues relating to the concepts of organizational goals and performance further reinforced a concern about the adequacy of the theoretical base upon which research on these topics has developed. In the present chapter a somewhat different approach will be suggested, which will be developed further in later chapters. It is hoped that this approach may be capable of being developed into a theoretical basis for the understanding of strategy and structural design in the organizational context in general, and the business context in particular.
