ABSTRACT
Hitherto we have been looking at the reality of economic inequality. There is no one-to-one connection between the reality of inequality and people’s perceptions of it and attitudes towards it. However much people declare themselves to live in an egalitarian society, there can still be real inequalities. In this chapter I shall be looking at perceptions of gender roles in the family, one of the basic units of Japanese society.
