ABSTRACT

Three major directions follow from the work reviewed in the previous chapter. One follows Weber's stress on formal organization modelled around the concept of the ‘ideal type’, which in subsequent work re-emphasizes the importance of the informal organization but within the context of the formal organization. Another follows the Paretian elements of Mayo's thoughts through to the model of the ‘social system’. The third stresses the role of technology as the key variable in the formal organization or social system. We shall consider the first direction in this chapter and consider the ‘social system’ perspective in the following chapter. In Chapter 9 we will consider the role of technology.
