ABSTRACT

An organization chart is a visual aid – a supplement to a verbal description of a structural framework. Charts are sometimes used as the only method of imparting information about the organization pattern and for detailing responsibilities. For the former, they provide an uncertain and vague appreciation of the general outline; for the latter they are wholly inadequate. The traditional chart shows job titles – Production Manager, Marketing Manager, etc. – which are but a poor reflection of the complex of duties attributable to each position. The traditional chart reveals little about the job of the Marketing Manager, except that it exists, that it is formally related vertically to a higher level and to a number of lower levels.
