ABSTRACT
Sixty years ago Henri Fayol, in many ways ahead of his time, put forward his fourteen Principles. One of these was the dogmatic assertion: ‘Centralization, like division of labour, is one of the laws of nature.’ Later writers supported ideas such as ‘one man, one boss’ and ‘the ideal span of control is four’.
