ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide an example of information systems planning. Aligning business and information technology (IT) strategies is often a key part of information systems planning. This example presents a semiotic approach that treats IT systems as an integral part of the business organisation. The applicability of the semiotic framework in e-government, particularly in an evolvable architecture for e-policing, is discussed in this chapter. The implementation of the national Information Systems Strategy for the Police Service and the Crime Justice Information Technology community is evaluated to demonstrate how organisational semiotics is practised in system planning in industry.
