ABSTRACT
In summary, word and translation pair characteristics are investigated to determine the way that different types of stimuli are represented and processed, as well as to explore other aspects of lexical processing and representation. The three factors explored in this chapter—cognate overlap, word concreteness, and translation ambiguity—all relate to similarity across languages, broadly construed. For each of these types of stimuli, the source of the effect is not entirely clear and awaits further research.
