ABSTRACT

Throughout the ICOM Code of Professional Ethics reference is made to establishing policies and procedure for museum-related activities. Records maintenance is a part of the procedural process and an integral element of collection care and utilization. Any object, work of art, scientific specimen, or historic artifact entering the museum must be identified, documented, and recorded in an accurate and permanent manner. The person doing the recording may vary from institution to institution or within a particular museum over a period of years. However, the implements of recording objects should remain as consistent as possible within the individual institution. Standardized forms are a reasonable and efficient means of maintaining records.
