ABSTRACT

The chapters in this book so far have considered theoretical issues in relation to discussing varieties in Englishes in sociohistorical contexts around the world, as they relate to issues of national identity. This chapter considers the various key approaches, issues, theories and methodological approaches that have generally been taken towards researching varieties of Englishes across the globe, and thus sets the scene for the remaining chapters of this book. This chapter, and the next two, consider the relationship between Englishes and social identity, particularly since the second half of the twentieth century.
