ABSTRACT

Sustainability for the Human Element Costumers are among the savviest people I know, although I admit a certain bias. I am constantly amazed by their fortitude, imagination, and tenacity. Because most everyone gets dressed in the morning, there is a sense that “anyone” can be a costumer. Indeed, truly great design looks natural and effortless. Anyone who has had a hand in it knows this to be the furthest thing from the truth. Costuming lives at the crossroads of high art and everyday living. Costumers bridge the gap between production and performance. Amongst technicians, we have the unique position of constant interaction with the cast because our work requires their presence and participation at many stages. Costume shops are constantly in the know, not because we are gossips (although sometimes we may be), but because we require communication with all production areas to do our work.
