ABSTRACT

In English ‘to be’ is the usual verb used to indicate where something is (‘the book is on the table’, ‘the picture was on the wall’, ‘the shop is over there’, ‘Anna is over here’). Russian also uses the verb ‘to be’ быть or находиться ‘to be found/situated’ to indicate location:

Книга на столе.

‘The book is on the table.’

Картина была на стене

‘The picture was on the wall.’

Магазин находится там.

‘The shop is there.’

Анна тут.

‘Anna is here.’
