ABSTRACT

Ordinal numbers in Russian are adjectival in form: пятый день (masculine) ‘the fifth day’; пятая картина (feminine) ‘the fifth picture’; пятое окно (neuter) ‘the fifth window’. Like any adjective, the ordinal must agree in case, number and gender with the noun it is qualifying (see Basic Russian, Unit 4):

nominative, singular, feminine:

первая лекция ‘the first lecture’

prepositional, singular, feminine:

на первой лекции ‘at the first lecture’

prepositional, plural:

на первых лекциях ‘at the first lectures’
