ABSTRACT
In looking back over the thousand years that have gone, we see one silver thread passing through them all, round which, like beautiful crystals, have gathered refuges for the poor, the aged, and the infirm. Whatever other motives may have helped to raise these memorials of our fathers' piety, that silver thread of Pity was the unfailing factor.
