ABSTRACT
In the following situations, young men interact with others, and the way they position themselves represents one of the patterns described in the previous chapter. Since I followed the participants into different contexts and over a longer period of time, it became clear that their positioning changed when they moved to other parts of the city, just like it changed over time. By focusing on one specific situation in the life of a participant, I am freezing a moment in order to investigate what is at stake. The positioning of one young man in other words slightly changes every time he interacts with others. The way a young man positions himself is related to his mobility and cultural repertories. Through interaction, a young man becomes someone who is more or less gang, township, suburban or flexible. The specific position accomplished in the situation can be categorised and continuously re-categorised when new interactions take place. In other words, the positions of the participants change slightly all the time depending on whom they interact with. When the positioning is continuously repeated by the same participant, I categorise them as performing certain cultural repertoires.
