ABSTRACT
In a diverse ninth grade classroom, the students and I had been exploring the ins and outs of language variations. As part of our lesson, I asked students to translate “How are you doing?” into a variety they would use with their friends in the hallway. Hands immediately shot up:
What up? What’s shakin’? Yo. What up, homie?
