ABSTRACT

Below is a selection of quotations from the Collected Works which Jung used at one time or another to define what he meant by archetypes. Taken alone none is conclusive, but taken together they give a clearer idea of the breath of what Jung meant and, by their omissions, of what he didn’t mean. Given the variety expressed by these quotes it can be seen why it is so difficult to pin him down, and why the subject has led to varying schools of thought within Jungian theory.
