ABSTRACT

A political stalemate has prevailed between Eritrea and Ethiopia since 2001, when relations between the two countries took the form of ‘Cold War’ politics – when nations pursued war indirectly via policies intended to destabilize their enemies. Thus Ethiopia hosts Eritrean opposition political parties, provides arms to Eritrean opposition groups whose objective is to destabilize Eritrea and in March 2012 sent troops into the TMZ. 1 Likewise, Eritrea has hosted and armed Ethiopian political parties and is alleged to have supported the OLF and other armed groups via supply lines running through Mogadishu (Lyons 2009: 173).
