ABSTRACT

I conclude my analysis of the odyssey of denationalized ‘Eritreans’ by drawing together the different strands of my argument under four inter-related themes explored in this book, namely the illusion of nationalism, the illusion of return, the illusion of refuge and the illusion of justice/redress. The final theme compels me to anticipate the future of ‘Eritreans’ in the West. I begin this last task by looking at attempts by ‘Eritreans’ to use the law to obtain legal redress against Ethiopia, following which I look at the effect of a ‘creeping amnesty’ being implemented by the UK Home Office and ask whether this might assist stateless ‘Eritreans’ to obtain status. Finally, in light of this case study, I re-examine the link between sovereignty and statelessness.
