ABSTRACT

THIS chapter is concerned with the complex set of rights which different members of a homestead have in the herd, and with the ways in which they can manipulate these rights to their own advantages. In order to appreciate these it is necessary first to outline the way in which a man’s stock is divided among his various wives. After each marriage he allots a certain portion of his herd to his bride and he retains a portion himself for future marriages. The portion given to each wife is referred to here as her allotted herd, and the portion retained by the husband is referred to as his residual herd, The residual herd and all the various allotted herds of the homestead form the total herd.
