ABSTRACT

The ways people cope with any life crisis are highly individualized. A strategy that helps one person may not help another, although there may be similarities in coping within a specific group. Survivors of parental suicide use a variety of coping mechanisms when dealing with the unique challenges they face. Our participants identified eight coping strategies that they found helpful (see Figure 4.1 for strategies and the number of participants reporting each). Similar strategies have been found in previous research (Clark & Goldney, 1995; Demi & Howell, 1991; Kaslow & Aronson, 2004; McMenamy et al., 2008; Requarth, 2006), and our findings offer unique insights into common coping mechanisms among parental suicide survivors.
