ABSTRACT

Festivals and celebrations have long been used as a way to get groups of people together, united in a common bond, throughout the world. We all like an excuse to celebrate, and particularly with the ones we love. It's human nature to want to feel like we're a part of something; that we belong. Festivals give us that sense of ownership. They give us something to believe in and share, particularly if there's a strong narrative thread to the event. It doesn't matter if it's a spiritual or religious festival, or something more incongruous — the idea is the same. It's about bringing people together, creating a structure that helps us make sense of the world. We can experience each other's cultures, broaden knowledge and learn to empathise and form relationships with others by becoming a part of these events. So it makes sense that they are key to learning, particularly for young children.
