ABSTRACT

The objective of this chapter is to describe the cities, towns and villages where we conducted our observations, interviews and surveys, to explain the rationale for our choice of schools and to highlight the physical and structural factors which characterize the schools involved in this project. Examination of structural aspects of children’s learning allows greater understanding not only of classroom interactions but also the range of educational needs and priorities that exist. For example, in both contexts, the level of facilities ranges from new buildings and a suite of audio-visual facilities in some schools to no toilet for children in others.
