ABSTRACT

This chapter places developments in the UK against the backdrop of wider shifts in the European media and footballing landscape. The previous chapter outlined how key factors in the development of a digital broadcasting environment in the UK have shaped and impacted on the football industry in the UK. In this part of the book we want to focus on the wider European dimension and examine how the particular evolution of the digital TV market has directly influenced the relationship between television and football across a number of European countries. Here we want to examine the dynamics influencing the changing relationship between rights holders and media corporations across the Continent and focus on the wider implications of these shifts for the governance of the game.
