ABSTRACT
The above passage from the Koran conveys the all-encompassing power God has for Azawagh Arabs: he “lengthens out the shadow,” pilots the sun, brings rain, and created mankind. This particular passage from the Koran was not regularly recited by Azawagh Arabs, but it nonetheless captures the centrality of Islam in Azawagh Arab daily life. Islam is so foundational to Azawagh Arabs’ sense of themselves as well as to everyday life that after having discussed fattening itself, I open the rest of my ethnographic account with a description of Islam’s meanings and practices. No arena of life is without the felt presence of God and Koranic teachings, and this includes care of the body.
