ABSTRACT

Let’s begin with a simple test. Name the English playwright whose career was tragically cut short when his male lover bashed in his head with a hammer. How many plays did he write? Name them. Name any actors or directors associated with the production of these plays. Now, the scoring. No points for knowing the name Joe Orton. Ten points if you guessed he wrote more than three plays. Five points for naming one play, ten for each additional play, fifty bonus points for getting all seven. Twenty points for every performer named (some obvious choices are Ralph Richardson, Beryl Reid, Richard Attenborough, Lee Remick, Malcolm McDowell, Albert Finney, Lindsay Anderson; and—in America—Alan Schneider, John Tillinger, Joseph Maher, Carole Shelley, Kevin Bacon, and Alec Baldwin). Give yourself five points for remembering Alfred Molina; subtract ten for Gary Oldman or Wallace Shawn. If at any point you mentioned Stephen Frears, John Lahr, or Christopher Marlowe, stop reading.
