ABSTRACT

Josephus reinfores the relationship between hubris and wealth by the compact phrase £%uPpioai 61a JitavOxov; the excessive natu re o f the wealth by JtoXug; and the accum ulation of possessions by the word XTqaap£vot£, better translated taken possession of. Continuing, Moses warns his people that if they succumb to their baser instincts, God will punish them : they will lose their land, be defeated, dispersed, and en slaved. This will be the consequence of their hubris (Ant. 4:190-191). T he pattern o f excess-crim e-punishm ent prevails, and it is hubris which char acterizes it.
