ABSTRACT
Current theories of literacy acquisition, including emergent literacy and critical theory, maintain that play can have an important role in early reading and writing development. There are links between play and literacy learning which have implications for education. These links suggest guidelines for setting up print-rich classroom play centers and for facilitative teacher involvement in play.
