ABSTRACT

With these changes in living conditions and play devices it is worthwhile examining the reality and potential of interactive technologies for children’s play. The following sections present selected research on video games as a case in point for the revised realities of children’s play. The social, cognitive, and motivational aspects of video game playing then are examined more closely by looking at the nature of games and their relevance to children’s development. The potential of interactive technologies also is discussed by considering constructive aspects of play; one example is children’s engagement in making games. The potential perspectives of interactive play environments will be explored by looking at the next generation of electronic building blocks and virtual playgrounds.
