ABSTRACT

In 2007, amidst a large-scale reorganization campaign of the higher education system, the Hungarian Accreditation Board accredited the first degree-granting gender studies program in Hungary. The process was surprisingly smooth, in fact there was only one word in the accreditation documents that the learned committee took issue with: the title to appear on the transcripts. They refused to include the word “scientific discipline” (társadalmi nemek tudománya) in the designation of the degree and insisted on using “field of study” (társadalmi nemek tanulmánya) instead.1
