ABSTRACT
Where does culture belong in the cluster of properties that together mark man’s nature? It has a slightly different standing from language and rationality, for they are not generally viewed as grievances; most people agree to praise them. But romantic individualism does complain of culture. It can be seen not as a positive achievement characteristic of man, but as something alien inflicted on him.
