ABSTRACT
When historians begin to investigate the past, they search for evidence of what happened, and that evidence will almost inevitably take the form of a text. How should they interpret that text? Texts can reveal a variety of things about the past, as we shall see, and how historians interpret texts depends upon the kind of information they are after. The first section of this chapter will sketch the kinds of meanings texts can have, and how they are discovered.
