The owners of the incantations, and others present when we taped and discussed them, suggested the above exegeses. While one can hazard a guess at the import of some of the similes, others made no sense to me until people explained them. Sometimes the reciters themselves had problems explaining the meaning of their pig ‘spells’, like the owners of hunting ‘spells’, and we had to discuss them to try and divine their intentions.42 It appears that some of the allusions are not readily apparent to people, or at least, they are not familiar with the idea of putting them into other words. Several of the incantations include strange variations of everyday words, sometimes entirely foreign ‘spell’ words that increase their opacity. Sometimes they help the rhyming flow. These exotic words may also add some extra potency. Indeed the mystery that surrounds incantations may contribute to their efficacy for some people. They repeat them as appropriate, believing them to be efficacious formulae without needing to reflect on their import.
