ABSTRACT

To begin my peering into the future I will briefly review two scenarios that address some of the themes of this book. There is, of course, a long tradition of books (and other media) that deal comprehensively with future cities (e.g. Blowers et al. 1974; Brotchie et al. 1995), but few writings consider future inter-city relations. The two scenarios I have chosen provide extreme possibilities for future cities in globalization, creating both a global dystopia of cities and a city utopia of freedom. These provide me with limits for my thinking, harbour lights for me to steer between in trying to understand future possibilities for the world city network.
