ABSTRACT

The linking of ‘community’ with ‘education’ at the very least implies a readiness to negotiate — perhaps even to reverse — some of the traditional role relationships between the ‘us’ and ‘them’ of the educational process e.g. teacher and student parent, professional and lay person, producer and consumer. In this sense ‘community’ represents the changing world outside the institutional cocoon of the professional worker and ‘community education’ is about evolving more open, participatory and democratic relationships between educators (of all kinds) and their constituencies.
