ABSTRACT

Civics and moral education encompass a rather broad and diverse set of educational phenomena, so it is necessary to begin by explaining the specific foci of this essay. The primary focus is on moral education, and this term is explained in some detail. Secondarily, the relation of moral education to civics education or citizenship education is explored, particularly from the vantage point of educating for democratic citizenship. Included in this section is a discussion of the elements of successful moral education for democracy. Finally, integrated throughout the discussion are considerations of new and impending trends in the field of moral education.
