ABSTRACT

In considering whether the division of labour in the household is equal, some men and women emphasise the aspect of sameness. Each person should have similar duties for equality to be achieved, or must put in the same effort in terms of time. For example: one woman thinks that she and her husband have an equal division of labour, because they perform roughly the same amounts of household chores. Experiences of pleasure and displeasure are recurring themes in the rationales that are provided for each type of labour division. The pleasure principle plays a significant role in the division of the labour between the spouses. One common reason why a certain division of labour is applied is often that one partner has a greater competence in specific tasks. One of them is simply better at certain things, such as repairs, cooking, planning, effective purchases or administration of the family budget.
