ABSTRACT

Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension, and where tension occurs steel bars are incorporated in the concrete to supply the tensile strength that the concrete lacks. A simple lintel or beam illustrates how two forces which attempt to bend it as shown, thus inducing compression in the top and tension in the bottom. Fig 1. To combat the tension mild steel rods are placed 25mm up from the bottom of the lintel to give protective cover to the steel. Fig 2. The rods are hooked at the ends to ensure effective grip. Fig 3.
