ABSTRACT
The object of underpinning is to transfer the load carried by an existing foundation to a new foundation at a lower depth. Underpinning may be necessary for a number of reasons:-
l. Settlement of the existing foundations has occurred. This may have been due to uneven loading, movement of the sub-foundation due to moisture movement, action of tree roots etc, or possible deterioration of the foundation concrete by sulphate action etc.
