The method used will depend on a number of factors. For small quantities hand excavationi is usually cheaper, and it may be necessary on restricted sites. The final selection of plant will depend on:-
l. The nature of the excavation, e.g. deep or shallow trenches, basement etc. 2. The type of soil. 3. Volume of soil to be dug and transported. 4. Length of haul to spoil heaps and type of terrain. 5. Cost of transporting plant. 6. Possibility of keeping plant fully occupied. 7. Plant available.
