ABSTRACT

Overall, the text can be understood as a kind of an “instruction manual” for bodhisattvas. In the opening chapter, Fantideva proclaims “I will now explain the entrance into the discipline of the bodhisattvas, through the expressed sayings [here] assembled” (1.10; BR 2). Then, after disclaiming any originality or altruistic intent – ironic due to both the subject and the fact that the same opening verses appear in the Bodhicaryavatara (I. 1-4; BR 1, 2) – Fantideva sets up the basis for the compassion which grounds the path to buddhahood. This is the subject of the first karika:

When fear and suffering are dear neither to me nor others, Then what is special about me, that I protect myself and

not others?
