ABSTRACT

He was first told he had been awarded a DSC (Distinguished Service Cross). Soon afterwards he was officially notified that the award was a DSO and heard that the King had had to sign the relevant documents twice, probably because the Admiral and the Governor had put up separate, and uncoordinated, recommendations. He clearly thought the whole matter rather a joke, though he did claim credit for having swum ashore in the course of each successful operation in order to gain first-hand knowledge of the conditions and to establish effective liaison on shore in person.
