ABSTRACT

The following were landed at Port-Miou in the course of Operations WATCHMAN III, OVERGROW and DUBONNET on 3/4 November for SOE:2 George Starr, Marcus Bloom, Mary Herbert, Mme M.T.Le Chêne and Odette Sanson. Embarked were: J.A.R. Starr, I.Newman, a W/T operator with Peter Churchill, a person with the field name ‘Richard’, his son and ‘Quintet’ Jaboune, brother of Claude Dauphin, recruited by ‘Carte’ for Radio Patrie, the clandestine broadcasting station operated by the British Political Warfare Executive, whose existence and tenor exacerbated relations with 4 Carlton Gardens. George Starr, though initially destined for Lyons, was to end up in Gascony, where he became a Maquis organiser of such standing that the Germans believed him to be a British general: his homeward-bound brother John, whom he met briefly on the beach, was to return to France, where he was captured by the Sicherheitsdienst, taken to their Avenue Foch headquarters and manipulated in the hope of extracting information from other SOE prisoners. Odette Sanson, courier to Peter Churchill, was subsequently captured with him, survived Ravensbrück and was awarded the George Cross. One agent was also landed for MI9 at Port-Miou that night, along with 1,0001b of stores for SOE.
