ABSTRACT

In November 1944, MI9, anticipating requirements for the seaborne evacuation of escaped prisoners of war from the south coast of France between Nice and Genoa, discussed with SOACF the possibility of setting up a small ACF base at Leghorn, Italy, to implement this requirement. The naval authorities agreed to this proposal and in December 1944 Lt Comdr D.T.MacCallum, DSC, RNR, established himself as the ACF representative at Leghorn on the staff of SOIS (Senior Officer Inshore Squadron), assisted by Lt P.C.Sylvester-Bradley, RNVR.
