ABSTRACT

Genrestraditionallyhavebeenprimarilyconceivedofandstudiedastextual systems,subjectedtoscholarlydefinitionandinterpretation.Despitetheubiquity ofthistextualistassumptionwithinfilmandtelevisionstudies,manyscholars haveacknowledgedtheroleofmediaindustriesincreatinggenres,incorporatingindustrialpracticesintotheiraccountsoftextualgenres.Thischapter examinestheindustrialfacetofgenresindepth,addressingspecificattributes ofthetelevisionmedium.Whilemostaccountsofindustrialpracticesframethe industryasaproducerofgenresthroughthecreationofgenerictexts,Iwishto lookattheindustry'sproductiveroleinconstitutinggenresthroughthecirculationofgenericdiscourses.Theroleoftheindustryingenericprocesses supercedesthetraditionalconfinesofproductionastheprimaryindustrial practice,especiallyforthetelevisionmedium,asexemplifiedbytwomoments inthehistoryofthecartoongenre.
